Kenneth “Ken” Paul Carlton died Friday, June 13, after a lengthy battle with ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease).

Ken was born Dec. 9, 1936, to Bertha (Fisher) and Ruel Carlton in Reedly. He attended Live Oak High School. He then began his career with IBM, where he retired after 34 years.

Ken married Barbara Jean Atchley on July 5, 1957. They moved from Morgan Hill to Longmont, Colo., in 1965. They relocated to Tucson, Ariz. with IBM, but ultimately kept Longmont as their home. They retired to Lake Havasu, Ariz. He then enjoyed working part-time at the London Bridge Golf Course and as the park manager at Sunset Mobile Home Park.

An avid fisherman, he spent time with his good friend Bob Erwin along the Colorado River in Lake Havasu. He enjoyed spending time with his three grandchildren along the shoreline of any lake or river. Most of his free time included hunting, golfing and flying his Cessna airplane. Ken and Barbara also traveled and enjoyed music and reading.

The last few months of Ken’s life were full of love and smiles from the very caring staff of Boulder County Hospice.

Ken is survived by his wife Barbara; son Tom and wife Rhonda of La Veta, Colo.; daughter Karen and husband Mark Zuege of Longmont; grandchildren Sarah Zuege of Colorado Springs, Calvin Carlton of La Veta and Jason Zuege of Longmont; brothers Vernon of San Jose, Larry and wife Sue of Spokane, Wash., and Steven and wife Pam of Missoula, Mont. Ken had a special fondness for Barbara’s sisters, Theda and husband Bob Rumery, Wanda and husband Frank Taitague, Shirley and husband Ron Rodrigues, Faye and husband Jack Bullard and brother Lewish and wife JoAnn Atchley. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Ken is preceded in death by both parents and his sister Judy Trevino of Vacaville.

A memorial service will be Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. at the Ahlberg Funeral Home in Longmont. There will be a cremation at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that any donations be sent to Hospice Care Boulder/Broomfield Counties or the ALS Association – Rocky Mountain Chapter in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
