As we prepare to celebrate the July 4 holiday weekend, please remember to ensure the health and safety of your pets during this time.
Fireworks often begin many days before the 4th so these safety measures can be made now. Keep your dogs and cats indoors if possible during firework displays even if it’s just in the garage. Check to ensure that all gates and fences are secured in your yard.
If you plan on leaving town please make sure that whomever cares for your pets keeps a close eye on them at this time. Also, make sure that both cats and dogs are collared and have ID tags on at all times in the event they become frightened and get out.
If despite these measures your pet gets out and becomes lost, immediately begin the search. Do not wait for several days to see if they come home.
If you live within the city limits of either Morgan Hill or Gilroy, please contact the local police department if you’ve lost a pet. If you live within the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County please come to the shelter in San Martin to look for your pet or to report it missing.
Let’s make this a safe and enjoyable holiday for all of us. Taking these steps will ensure your pet’s safety and may well save you the heartache of a missing and possible injured pet. It may also help to avoid a costly trip to the police station or animal shelter to retrieve your pet.
