ACC, Big East don’t deserve automatic BCS bids

Times expires as Raiders drive to 1-yard line
SUNNYVALE — Morgan Hill’s Junior Midgets played to a 14-14 tie on the road Saturday against the Sunnyvale Micro Rockets.

Sunnyvale struck early with a 95-yard touchdown run on its first play from scrimmage. The Raiders (2-2-1) battled back when running back Jesse Osuna rushed for a 10-yard score early in the second quarter.

The Raiders ground attack produced 200 rushing yards, with much of the load split between Osuna and Colby Lauback advancing behind blocks by Anthony Ditta, Josh Alaniz, Hunter Kirk and Daniel Dunham.

Morgan Hill quarterback Andrew Mesa kept the Sunnyvale team off balance in the second half when he completed a 9-yard pass to Porras for a first down. Osuna’s second 10-yard touchdown run of the afternoon capped an 11-play drive in the third quarter. Jospeh Amaral’s 2-kick tied the game 14-14.

The Raiders’ defense held Sunnyvale scoreless and limited the Micro Rockets to 23 yards in the second half. The Raiders’ defensive standouts included Jacob Hoekstra, Joshua Tynan and Dominic Dorcich, who provided sure tackling and helped to contain the Sunnyvale offense. Teammates Ryan Quadros, Osuna, Lauback and Dunham continued their sound play at linebacker.

The game ended when the Raiders took over possession at their own 10-yard line with less than three minutes to play. Their powerful ground attack advanced the ball to midfield. With only a few seconds remaining, Mesa handed the ball to Osuna, who rushed 49 yards only to be ruled down just inches short of the goal line with no time remaining.

Morgan Hill had its two-game winning streak snapped last Saturday with a 38-8 loss to the visiting Santa Clara Lions.

The Raiders scored first on a seven-play drive that featured a couple nice runs by Quadros and solid blocking by Kirk, Ditta and Billy Bennett. Osuna rushed into the end zone from eight yards out, and Amaral added a 2-point conversion kick.

On the other side of the ball, linebacker Daniel Dunham tallied a half dozen tackles for Morgan Hill. The Junior Midget Raiders continue their season at 3 p.m. Sunday against the West Valley Falcons at Saratoga High.
