Led by Kate Rick and Kortney Kay, the Morgan Hill Swim Club
(Makos) enjoyed several fine individual performances at the Coast
Valley Aquatics League championships at the Morgan Hill Aquatics
Center last weekend. Competing in temperatures approaching 100
degrees on Saturday and Sunday of the two-day event, both Rick
(11-12) and Kay (10U) emerged from the league finals with
individual high-point titles for the Makos. And, Rick was one of
four swimmers to earn a
“perfect score,” winning all the races she competed in.
Led by Kate Rick and Kortney Kay, the Morgan Hill Swim Club (Makos) enjoyed several fine individual performances at the Coast Valley Aquatics League championships at the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center last weekend.
Competing in temperatures approaching 100 degrees on Saturday and Sunday of the two-day event, both Rick (11-12) and Kay (10U) emerged from the league finals with individual high-point titles for the Makos.
And, Rick was one of four swimmers to earn a “perfect score,” winning all the races she competed in.
Rick won the 50 freestyle, 100 free, 200 free, 50 breaststroke, and 50 butterfly.
Kay won the 50 free, 200 free, and 100 individual medley, and took second in the 100 free, and 50 breast.
Other area high-point title winners included the Gilroy Gators’ Luke Walton (11-12), who also earned a perfect score, and San Benito Aquatics’ Blaine Curtice (15-16).
Also for the Makos, Ryan McCombs (10U) took second in points in his age group, Mike Wu (13-14) was second and Steven Rick (13-14) was fourth in their age group, and Laura Melroy was fourth in the 15-18 age group.
Meanwhile, other Makos event winners included McCombs in the 200 free and 50 backstroke, Wu in the 500 free and 100 fly, and Steven Rick in the 100 breast.
And, several Makos turned in top three finishes in events, including Katie Brewer (10U), second, 50 back; Alisa Pinarbasi (13-14), third, 50 free; Melroy, second, 100 free, and third, 100 back; Missy Miller (15-18), third, 500 free; Cleve Gurney (10U), second, 50 free, and third, 50 back; Timmy Thompson (11-12), third, 50 breast; Wu, second, 50 free, and second, 100 free; and Steven Rick, third, 100 free, second, 500 free, third, 100 back, and third, 200 IM.
The Makos also chalked up a host of victories and top three finishes in the various relay events.
In the team competition, the Cabrillo Threshers won another in a string of titles, amassing 3,331 points, and easily outdistancing second place Salinas Valley Aquatics (2,720) and third place Monterey Bay Swim Club (2,287.5).
The Gilroy Gators took sixth, followed by the Makos in seventh and San Benito Aquatics in eighth.
This is the second year the CVAL championships have been held at the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center.
