Campaign, Oxfam America has just released a new video called Hunger
in a World of Plenty. It succintly explores the reasons for
widespread poverty and hunger in our world, and reminds us that
“it is a simple matter of chance that determines who will be
born into poverty and live at risk of becoming one of the 17 people
per minute who die from preventable sickness related to
hunger.”

In conjuction with their Fast For A World Harvest Campaign, Oxfam America has just released a new video called Hunger in a World of Plenty. It succintly explores the reasons for widespread poverty and hunger in our world, and reminds us that “it is a simple matter of chance that determines who will be born into poverty and live at risk of becoming one of the 17 people per minute who die from preventable sickness related to hunger.” That’s about 25,000 people per day, and a disproportionate share are women and children, a truly staggering reality.
Oxfam recognizes that “poverty comes from lack of knowledge, resources, and opportunity. At its root, it exists because of inequities established and perpetuated by political and economic policies and structures.”
This short film explores the the general causes of poverty – toil, burden and oppression and searches for some long-term sustainable solutions to global hunger. One such long-term solution, that is relatively easy to implement by all of us, is our increasing support of the Fair Trade economic model.
I would like to invite anyone who shares a common concern for social justice to view this film at the Morgan Hill Public Library Community Room on Thursday, July 22.
