Human Lives for Big Oil

Dear Editor,

Sacrifice of American lives is a vital part of the Bush plan to provide Big Oil with an unbelievable payday from privatization of Iraqi oil reserves. Sacrificed lives are also essential to maximize the profits of Dubai’s Halliburton. The only possible way to end the sacrifice of American lives is to elect a Democratic president. The leading Republican candidates stand with Bush, Halliburton and Big Oil, wanting to keep American forces in Iraq indefinitely. They talk of the same victory touted by Bush/Cheney. Stopping the senseless loss of lives seems to be on hold for 19 more months.

Responding to Anti-Bush Rhetoric, Supporting Troops

Dear Editor,

I haven’t quite figured out letter writer Frank Crosby, but after reading YET ANOTHER tirade about our president, I must respond to his constant anti-Bush rhetoric.

While I don’t blindly agree with every policy President Bush endorses, I am confident of some things … he is an honest, caring man of strong character who proudly loves his country and is doing his best to protect it. Oh, and another plus, I don’t have to worry about reading a headline about another sleazy affair my president, the leader of my country, is involved in. But, I digress. After returning from a very moving Memorial Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Fresno and seeing the troops, past and present, who were there, my belief that these brave men and women need our support and our thanks was reinforced. Please remember Mr. Crosby, that these people have VOLUNTEERED to serve their country (that means you) to protect us from an enemy you cannot deny is real, and they passionately believe in and are proud of what they are doing. Their motto and pledge is the same now as it has been in wars past: Duty, Honor, Country. If you would rely on real facts and not simply on your hatred for our president, you would come to the following conclusions:

  • We were attacked in 2001, we have not been attacked in our country since.

  • There is an enemy who wants to destroy our way of life, we have a president and troops who are determined not to let that happen.

  • My grandson-in-law is in Afghanistan (voluntarily remember). His wife is terrified and furious that funds may be cut for this war he is fighting on our behalf.

Shame on you Mr. Crosby, for suggesting you support the troops yet want to leave them vulnerable to what you seem to think is an enemy that will just disappear if all Americans come home. Yes, each soldier that is killed is a tragic loss and I grieve for each one and the loved ones they leave behind, but I am also grateful and thankful for each one.

Mr. Crosby, if it quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it is a duck! Al Quaida has declared repeatedly that their goal is to DESTROY AMERICA. They proudly claim to be our enemy, they attack us like our enemy, therefore, they are our enemy. We are in a War! Whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan or any other country, the leaders of the Al Quaida Muslims have stated that they are certain of victory because Americans don’t have the patience, resolve and courage to sustain a fight (e.g.Vietnam). You, Mr. Crosby are reinforcing their confidence. I am not willing to do that. Thank God we have a president and brave military men and women who love this country and are willing to defend it despite being maligned and attacked by people such as yourself.
