Dear Editor,

I read in a recent Times article that the City Council hasn’t received much feedback on the latest settlement to the city attorney. There were comments like “We can console ourselves with the notion that, given the same information, most people would have done the same thing,” or “It’s the right thing for the city.”

Here’s some feedback:

Come on. Don’t delude yourselves into thinking people approve the handling of this sordid case. We probably don’t know the half of it and what we do know is so bizarre that it’s almost unimaginable. We need the details of this settlement. The devil is in the details.

Money that could have been used for the betterment of the city and its citizens has gone to enrich the pockets of greedy lawyers. What a waste and when the city can least afford it. Don’t use this as an excuse to cut city services or lay off city employees. You have taken that off the table with your recent actions. You will light a firestorm if you try and take this out of the hide of city residents and city employees.

What you need to do is get this money back. You can do that by going to the source of the problem. As I understand it, the former city councilwoman made unsubstantiated charges that caused the city attorney to become upset.

She also hid the fact that her attorney hired a private investigator. The city hired an investigator to find out what she already knew. More money wasted. She may be a nice person, but she has caused this city a lot of grief and she needs to make compensation. That should be the first job of your new city attorney. Oh, and please do a better job of hiring this one.
