So you have fitness goals, and you are not sure how to achieve them. Thus, you decide to get help. Now, one question looms large: “How do I choose a personal trainer?”

A very valid question.

The first order of business is to determine exactly what your goals are. Be as specific as possible. This information will help you decide on the most effective personal trainer for you, and you will get the most out of your sessions. As in any profession, different trainers will have different strengths.

For example, do you want to lose weight? If this is the case, choose a trainer who has more experience in the areas of weight reduction and maintenance.

Do you want to gain muscle mass? Perhaps you want to consider a fitness professional with a background in bodybuilding.

Regardless of the trainer you choose, there are certain questions you want to ask to be sure you are getting the most qualified individual for your particular needs.

n What sort of certifications does your trainer have? Do they have a degree in exercise science, physical education or sports medicine?

n Are they certified by a nationally recognized organization such as the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the National Strength & Conditioning Association, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), or the Aerobics & Fitness Association of America (AFAA)?

n What sort of professional experience does your trainer have? How long have they been in the fitness business?

n Does your trainer require a physician’s release? Your trainer should be aware of any health limitations or restrictions you have.

n Will your trainer evaluate your beginning fitness level, and reassess your progress periodically?

n How realistic are your goals? You set your goals at the beginning, but how attainable are they? A qualified trainer will be able to help you assess them. For example, do you want to lose 50 pounds in one month, or are you looking at six months for this goal?

n Is your trainer affordable in your budget? And do you have the time to meet with them? Do they have the flexibility to work with your schedule?

n What about safety? Is your trainer certified in CPR and First Aid?

n Is nutritional guidance something you are looking for? Does your trainer have the background to meet this need?

n How creative is your trainer? One of the largest obstacles is boredom. Can your trainer keep you interested and challenged?

n In what sort of facility will you be trained in? Is it a place in which you will be comfortable exercising?

n Finally, one of the most important factors in choosing a trainer is personality. Can this individual inspire you? Are they friendly? Do you get along on a personal level?

Working with the right personal trainer is crucial to your success in reaching your fitness goals. No program is complete without the proper combination of guidance, motivation, inspiration, and understanding. Choose carefully, for this person will have a significant impact on your fitness achievements.
