A lone gunman robbed the Residence Inn on Madrone Parkway late Tuesday night and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing.

The robber, who was wearing a long-sleeved black sweater and black pants with a black watch cap pulled down low over his ears, held the two night front desk clerks at gunpoint with a chrome revolver shortly before midnight. He ordered one of them down to the floor, then instructed the other clerk to clean out the cash drawers and stuff the cash into a plastic Residence Inn bag, Swing said.

Once he had the bag of cash, the gunman made his escape, after insisting that the clerks vault the counter and enter the elevator. The employees did not see whether the gunman left on foot or by car.

Police were called to the scene at approximately 11:55 p.m., Swing said, but the gunman was no longer in the area.

The clerks described the man as a Hispanic in his late 20s or early 30s, perhaps 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing approximately 250 pounds. The gunman had a black mustache, the clerks told police.

The manager on duty Wednesday at the Residence Inn referred all questions about the robbery to the police. When pressed for comment, he referred the Times to the company’s corporate office. A message was left for the spokesperson, but the call was not returned by presstime. Residence Inn is owned by the Marriott Corporation.

Tuesday night’s incident was the third time in a month police were called to a hotel on Madrone Parkway. On Oct. 22, police responded to the Residence Inn when a man in wheelchair drowned in the hotel pool, and on Oct. 20, they were called to an armed robbery at the neighboring hotel, the Courtyard Marriott.

Swing said the department’s investigators have some leads they are pursuing, and they hope to have an artist’s sketch of the suspect in Tuesday’s armed robbery available for the public soon.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact Det. Kevin Beilmann at 408.776.7323. To leave an anonymous tip, contact Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at 408.947.STOP.
