CALLER 1: Hi, I’m calling to concur with a parent’s request last year that I’m speaking about the junior varsity football teams that are not getting a mention in the paper. There’s no times listed for their games, there’s no scores listed. And you know what, these boys are out there every day after school practicing just as well as the varsity boys are and they have their games every week just like the varsity boys do. So I hope that you can put a little something in the paper regarding their games also because they’re just as important. Thank you very much.
GREEN PHONE: Thanks for your thoughts, Caller 1. This is probably the most common complaint that those is the business of covering high school sports receive and to be honest, it’s a bit of a frustrating one. We certainly know how hard every team works, junior varsity included, and it would be great to get a ton of coverage in for every team. Unfortunately, the facts are that the resources just don’t exist to do so. With two high schools in the city and both playing numerous different sports, it’s an extreme challenge to provide adequate coverage to every varsity team, let alone provide solid coverage of junior varsity teams. As a result, the focus gets centered on the varsity teams. While the JV teams are important also, a big factor is that in a year or two, those JV players will be the stars of the varsity teams and will at that time have their opportunity to be recognized. Even with that being said, the Times has made strides to improve its JV coverage. We are on the verge of beginning “JV Corner,” a weekly feature written by high school journalism students that updates the progress of JV teams. We hope it’s an effective way to provide coverage the readers want that we simply don’t have the resources to provide. Another feature the Times has added is a new submission form on our Web site. Feel free to visit www.morganhilltimes.com and click on the Sports Submission Form on the right side and include all the appropriate information and you should see it in the Times. There is also a spot to upload a photo, so you are more than encouraged to utilize that tool.
