CALLER 1: It’s not really a beef. I just wanted to know why is it that the paper never covers the little freshman team? There’s a lot of us grandparents and parents out there that like to read about that little team because we have a loved one involved in it. Please see what you can do. Thank you.
GREEN PHONE: Thanks, Caller 1. We have another caller who shares your views. Read on …
CALLER 2: My beef is, I’m curious why we can’t get any type of exposure to the freshman and JV football team. They are the feeder kids that go on to this varsity team. The coverage that you do for the varsity is awesome, but I’d like to see some more JV and freshmen. Give these kids something to look forward to in the newspaper. Pop Warner has an awesome write-up on usually Tuesdays or Wednesdays and you’re giving them all kinds (of attention), which is great. But what about the freshmen and the JV? Come on, you guys. Let’s see some more action. Thank you.
GREEN PHONE: With the new school year starting and high school sports getting into full swing, we should have anticipated the return of one of the most popular Green Phone beefs: Why we don’t cover the lower-level sports. For the most part we simply don’t have enough manpower or hours in the day to cover all the JV programs of every sport. That being said, however, football is a bit of an exception because of our readership’s overwhelming interest. So our coverage of the freshman and JV football games is something we’ll be paying extra attention to this week. By the time next week rolls around, you can expect an improvement in this regard. Your opinions are both valued and taken seriously and this is an issue that will receive our immediate attention. Thank you for bringing it to our attention in such a dignified manner.
Having said that, the Green Phone is giving you, the readers, a challenge. If you really want to see more JV coverage, especially in other sports, put some pressure on JV coaches to give the our sports department a call. The contact info is all over the sports page. We’ll always take a call or e-mail from JV coaches about a game. But frankly, there aren’t enough hours in the day for the sports department to chase down every JV event or coach for a result. So here’s an open invitation to all JV coaches. Give us a call!
