This letter is in response to the letter from Jerry Di Salvo published in the July 27 edition. Jerry stated that the group in favor of building the new library at the Civic Center site is a small group that obtained signatures by providing false information. To my knowledge, we did not use false information. I obtained 250 signatures and I provided information to each person with whom I spoke, but the information that I provided was only the information that was provided either by the City Council, the Library Commission or the two prospective builders.

The members of the small group who were circulating petitions in favor of the Civic Center Site, obtained the majority of the signatures during the Fourth of July Celebrations, at the Farmer’s Market, at the Friday Night Music or other public gatherings. Several senior citizens asked for petitions to circulate. We surveyed the petitions and found that 20 percent of those signatures were from the neighborhood of the library and 80 percent were from other areas of Morgan Hill and immediately adjacent county areas.

Our interest is solely to have an excellent library in a location where it will be used by the most residents. The library should not be used to solve the problems of downtown.

Our group will continue to work to make our new library a wonderful place for citizens to enjoy and where children can learn. I thank the City Council for re-evaluating their original decision.
