Three Sobrato wrestlers were still alive after Day 1 at the 32nd annual Mid-Cal Classic.

Bryan Gomes, Zach Zhang and Evan Enright fell out of title contention with losses Friday, but will be out to place when the double-elimination tournament resumes at 9 a.m. today at Gilroy High School.

Gomes is set to face Nathan Nugaray of Madera South at 122 pounds, Enright will take on Dylan Forzoni of Salinas at 162 pounds; and Zhang awaits the winner of Samer El Nounou (Fremont–Los Angeles) and Gary Hohbach (Palo Alto) at 147 pounds.

Zhang got off to a great start, beating Overfelt’s Eric Morales by fall and Edy Antonio of North Salinas by 10-9 decision. He was then pinned by top seed Joey Lavallee of Reno–Rancho Bernardo.

Enright won his first match as well, defeating Palo Alto’s Matt Dansereau 6-4. He lost his next match, 9-6, to Matt McConnon of Overfelt but responded with a 3-2 victory over Abdallah Mahmoud of Terra Nova.

Daniel Johnson (128 pounds) and Thomas Burback (140) also won matches for Sobrato, which has 36 points and is 43rd out of 74 schools.

Host Gilroy (156) is in first place, ahead of defending champion Selma (150).

The third-/fourth- and fifth-/sixth-place matches are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. today, followed by the finals at 5.
