There is too much confusion from books and articles about ball position. Some start with the driver off the left heel then move the ball back an inch with every club with the wedge in the center of the stance. For most golfers this will cause inconsistency in the set-up. If the ball position is too far forward, your shoulders will tend to be open from the target line. Conversely, if the ball is too far back the shoulders will tend to be closed. Try this approach; at address, with your feet together, place the ball in the middle of your stance. With your short irons, (8,9,PW, SW) move your left heel two or three inches to the left, then your right foot the same distance to the right. With the middle irons, (5, 6, 7) move your right foot only two more inches to the right. The long irons and wodds, move the right foot just outside your right shoulder. The key is the ball position never changes relative to your left heel, thus keeping your shoulders square. This will lead to a more consistent set-up, and more consistent shots.
