I find the vitriol displayed by Jerry Di Salvo in his letter to the editor published in the July 27 edition of the Morgan Hill Times very disturbing. I am one of the “few” that are in favor of a Civic Center library, and I am also one of the citizens of Morgan Hill who has worked for the past month in getting the word out about the council’s vote, and I also worked to gather signatures on the petition in favor of a Civic Center Library.
I take issue and offense that Mr. Di Salvo claims I gathered these signatures by using false information – on the contrary, I simply put out a table outside Farmer’s Market, with a sign that said “Sign a petition for a Civic Center Library Site.” I did not call out to anyone, but I answered questions from anyone stopping by the table wanting information. I told those who stopped by that the City Council was planning to build a new library and the sites up for consideration were at Third and Depot (which I pointed to) or behind the current site of the library.
Out of the approximately 50 people I talked to that Saturday, two said they would think about it, one person said they were for a downtown library, and the remaining were in favor of the Civic Center and signed the petition.
It’s troubling that Mr. Di Salvo and others in Morgan Hill would like to portray myself and the other citizens who worked for the Civic Center site as disseminating disinformation; basically calling us liars. I truly resent that. What we are is a group of citizens who are passionate about keeping the library at the Civic Center, who saw there was a chance that our beloved library was going to be moved to a spot that, in my opinion, wasn’t the best for the library itself. Some in town thought a downtown library was a good idea to help downtown revitalization. I want a library for the library’s sake, not for any other reason.
Mr. Di Salvo, if you felt so strongly for a downtown library, you should have taken up the cause and taken the time, as we did, to go to the community and urge them to let their elected officials know how they felt. You said that you wished you would have made more noise to lobby for the downtown site and for believing that the council would stand up and do what was best for Morgan Hill. I, for one, am glad that council stood up and did what was best for the library.
