MORGAN HILL

It didn’t take much to persuade Monte Vista Christian to enter Saturday’s Dig Pink girls volleyball event at Live Oak High School.

The Mustangs’ team mom, Nancy Lazenby Blaser, is commissioner of the Central Coast Section, a Morgan Hill resident and a breast cancer survivor.

“It makes me proud seeing these young girls contribute to something that hopefully never affects them,” said Blaser, now cancer-free for 11 years. “I’m excited these girls are doing something about it.”

Saturday’s admission-free event supports breast cancer research and will pit the Acorns and MVC against each other after Sobrato and Christopher square off at 5 p.m.

The twin-bill has little to do with volleyball though.

“Win or lose, it’s all about raising money,” LOHS coach James Uthes said.

Tax-deductible donations can be made by visiting digdeepdigpink.com and selecting one of the four schools involved.

Event organizer Heather Unger hopes to build off the success of last year’s event, which raised more than $5,000. Unger’s daughter, Alli, plays libero for LOHS and designed the Dig Pink T-shirts that will be on sale Saturday, along with other charitable items. Players and team moms from all four schools have pitched in.

“If we can make it so these girls never have to deal with this (disease) it would be a dream come true,” Heather Unger said.
