SOCCER: Sentimental favorite Japan stuns betting favorite U.S. in Women’s World Cup final

MORGAN HILL — Sam Riolo’s goal in the second half Wednesday pushed Live Oak past visiting Pioneer 1-0 and helped the Acorns stay atop the tight Mount Hamilton Division championship race.

Live Oak (8-3-4 overall, 6-2-1 league), which fell from No. 12 to No. 15 this week in the San Jose Mercury News rankings, remained tied for first place with Leigh — a game ahead of Leland and two in front of Branham with five games remaining. If the season ended today, all four would earn automatic invites to the Central Coast Section playoffs.

Against Pioneer (2-12-1, 1-8-1), Live Oak was coming off a 2-1 loss at Leigh; the Acorns’ second loss in four games. They will host longtime league rival Willow Glen at 3:15 p.m. Friday.

Westmont’s loss to Del Mar took the sting out of Sobrato’s first defeat in Santa Teresa Division play Wednesday in Saratoga.

The Lady Bulldogs (6-2-6, 4-1-4) still lead the division by less than a game over the Panthers (5-7-3, 4-2-3), who won on Erin Buchner’s goal in the first half.

Overfelt visits Sobrato at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
