Morgan Hill – The Sobrato girls varsity soccer team is fortunate they don’t have to start from scratch as it kicks off its first season with 11 players returning from last season’s junior varsity team.
The Lady Bulldogs, with only four juniors on the team, will have their work cut out for them this season as they compete against teams that are older and have more experience.
“It will be tough to compete with the older teams and match their experience,” said Sobrato coach Susan Scigliano. “We certainly can be competitive and we have the potential with a lot of talented girls.”
The attacking core of the Bulldogs will be made up of returners Ashley Grose, Katie Alton and Cecily Mishimatsu. Grose lead the Bulldogs jv team in scoring last season and Alton was the second leading scorer.
Starting goalkeeper for Sobrato is talented sophomore Katrina Olsen. “Katrina is outstanding. She is the best goalkeeper I’ve ever coached,” said Scigliano. “We have a good returning core, and they’ll be around for a few years.”
Emma Lawrence and Sara Morimoto return to anchor the back of the Bulldogs’ defense. This season they will be joined by freshmen Ashley Robinson and Remy Gross in the backfield to solidify the defense.
This season will be a building one for Sobrato, a chance to find out where each player fits on the team and where they contribute the best.
“We are going to try to find some kind of lineup that makes sense,” said Scigliano. “We will be building this year and really good next year.”
Scigliano added, “Hopefully the girls will enjoy this season. I don’t want them to be discouraged. I want to teach them what they need to know without them getting discouraged with losing.”
The Lady Bulldogs face Silver Creek at home on Tuesday at 3:30pm.

Outlook:
The biggest challenge facing the Lady Bulldogs in their inaugural varsity season will be their youth and inexperience compared with other teams in the league. Fortunately for Sobrato they have 11 returning players from last season’s JV team, so developing team chemistry won’t be a problem. A solid back defense will allow the Bulldogs to be competitive.
