A 6-year-old girl was doused with pepper spray Thursday evening during an altercation between her father and a man who said he owed him money.

The girl, however, did not require medical treatment, but the men were arrested on a variety of charges including assault, battery and vandalism.

Reymundo Armendariz, 36, of Morgan Hill, told police he was at his home on Barnell Avenue when Aaron Fontanilla, 35, came to the door demanding that Armendariz pay him money that he owed him, according to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing.

Armendariz allegedly told Fontanilla not to bring his business to Armendariz’s home and told him to leave. Swing said that’s when Fontanilla pulled out pepper spray, and in the process of spraying Armendariz in the face, he also sprayed Armendariz’s 6-year-old daughter in the arm.

Armendariz became enraged and grabbed a baseball bat and a machete as he left the house to confront Fontanilla. Swing said Armendariz dropped the machete before he reached Fontanilla’s minivan, but allegedly continued to wield the bat, using it to shatter a van’s window.

Both men called police just after 6 p.m., Swing said, and both men were arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail.

Armendariz was arrested for alleged vandalism, battery and brandishing a weapon, and Fontanilla was arrested for alleged assault with a deadly weapon, battery and assault with caustic chemicals.
