A single-vehicle traffic accident on Watsonville Road resulted in a fatality Friday afternoon, police said.

The accident occurred in the area of Watsonville Road and Venetian Way—a few blocks southeast of Monterey Road—about 3:45pm Nov. 9, reads a press release from Morgan Hill Police Department.

When police arrived on scene, a vehicle was located on the north sidewalk of Watsonville Road. The vehicle exhibited major front-end damage, according to police. Two people inside the vehicle appeared to have significant injuries and both were unresponsive.

Morgan Hill Police and the Fire Department began rescue efforts on the two crash victims, according to authorities.

The driver and passenger—both Gilroy residents—were transported to a local trauma center. The passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, police said. The driver of the vehicle is listed in critical condition.

Officers from the MHPD Traffic Unit are investigating the collision, police said. Prior to the collision, the vehicle was seen traveling eastbound on Watsonville Road, then drifted across the westbound lanes of traffic and collided with a tree.
