Gilroy High junior 135-pounder Armando Gonzalez led the Mustangs
wrestling team to an historic sixth-place finish at the state
wrestling finals in Bakersfield on Saturday. Gonzales, who finished
third overall, advanced to the semifinals before losing. After
dropping his semifinal match on Saturday to Chapparal
’s Chris Drouin by a 2-1 score, Gonzalez bounced back with a 3-1
win over Nevada Union’s Luke Manuel. In the third-place match, the
coach’s son was able to handle Poway’s surprise placer Schuyler
Palmer, 3-2, to become Gilroy’s highest state placer since Luke
Corona and Sergio Mar both ha
d third-place finishes in 1993.

Meanwhile, GHS’ other state wrestlers, Nicolo Naranjo (103), Adin Duenas (130) and Hunter Collins (160), also placed in the Top 8 at the finals.
Naranjo placed fourth, Duenas seventh and Collins eighth.
Only the 1993 Mustangs, with three placers (Sergio Mar – 4, Isaac Alvarez – 5, and Noel Grover – 8), finished as high at State.
