Morgan Hill Police will participate in the statewide “Click It or Ticket” campaign from Tuesday through Nov. 30. As part of the statewide effort, police will keep an eye out for drivers, passengers and children who are not properly restrained.

Local police caution that no warnings will be issued, as failure to buckle up is a violation of state law. “Click It or Ticket” also relies on education to ensure motorists and their passengers are safely buckled in.

“There is absolutely no question that seat belts save lives,” said Police Chief Bruce Cumming. “Buckling up will not only save you a heavy fine, it can also save your life.”

California has a seat belt usage rate of 95.4 percent, which means that more 1.5 million people in the state are still not buckling up, according to police.

Properly restrained drivers, passengers and children have a 50 percent better chance of surviving a crash than unrestrained motorists. Unbuckled occupants ejected from vehicles in crashes or rollovers are up to 35 percent more likely to die than restrained occupants.

More than 175 local law enforcement agencies statewide and the CHP will participate in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
