WAITING TO COOL OFF
“I have noticed … and so have my grandchildren … that the fountains at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center have not been in operation for quite some time now. Could it be conservation or rising water costs or is it simply someone forgot and turned the water off last winter and forgot to turn it back on? Help … we’re burning up!”

After tests confirmed microbes sickened seven people who played in the water at San Jose’s Plaza de Cesar Chavez last year, Morgan Hill officials
confirmed that the public fountain at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center will remain closed until further notice due to germs found.
“The city is in the process of considering a variety of water-treatment options to ensure the interactive fountain remains safe and sanitary for the enjoyment of the general public,” said Steve Rymer, director of the Morgan Hill Recreation and Community Services Department, in an e-mail.
Because the water is recycled, untreated fountains pose a health risk. Until last year, Bay Area cities and counties lacked any public oversight of fountains.
After the public health concern last summer in San Jose, Santa Clara County health officials requested all interactive fountains be turned off until treatment systems could be installed.
Rymer said the city is working with the county to address health concerns before reopening the popular water feature where the fountains shoot jets of water that many children enjoy playing in on hot summer days.
TAKING OFF FROM MORGAN HILL
“I’m going out of town and I don’t want to park my car at the airport the whole time I am gone. How can I get to the San Jose Airport from Morgan Hill without driving?”
RED PHONE
It would be great if it were a little less of a hassle, but there is a way for you to use mass transit to get to your take-off point. Red Phone called the Santa Clara County Transportation Authority on this one.
Taking bus route line 68 to San Jose Diridon Transit Center will get you to Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport. Here’s how you do it: Hop on the No. 68 at the Caltrain station in town and ride to the San Jose Diridon Station. There, board the Santa Teresa Light Rail route 901. It will say “Alum Rock to Santa Teresa.” Get off at the Metro Airport Station and catch bus No. 10, the VTA/SJC Airport Flyer, at the Santa Clara Caltrain station. The bus fare is $1.75, the light rail fare is also $1.75 and the Airport Flyer is a free service that runs 5am to midnight.
For more information, visit www.vta.org or call VTA customer service at (408) 321-2300.
WHEN DO I GET MY PAPER?
“I do not expect this to be published but would be grateful for any help you can give me. I have resided in Morgan Hill for about 15 months and have tried several times to subscribe to the Morgan Hill Times to no avail! The first time was when I first arrived in April, then again in December and then again in April, when we moved to a new house. The last time I tried, I was offered a gas card as a “reward” for subscribing. Nothing arrived – no paper, no gas card, and thankfully I suppose, no paper. I like to support businesses and events in the city where I live but without the local paper it is difficult. Is there some reason I cannot get a subscription and have to be satisfied with the occasional Friday freebee?”
