McPherson has been selected for an honorary degree due to his active promotion of and participation in Gavilan College events, and his long career in support of education. He is currently chairman of the Senate Public Safety Committee, vice-chairman of the Senate Education Committee, and a member of the Environmental Quality Committee and two Budget Subcommittees. McPherson and his wife, Mary, established endowments to create a dropout prevention program and to enhance the athletic programs for students in the Santa Cruz City School District. He also spearheaded the creation of a literacy program in Santa Cruz County when he was president of the Santa Cruz Rotary Club.
The ceremony, which will be held in the gym, is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on the main campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy.
