Santa Clara Supervisor Don Gage has decided not to endorse AB 1835, a bill that would raise California’s minimum wage from $6.75 to $7.75 by 2008.

Gage said he supports the concept of an increase, but has concerns about future “automatic adjustments” promised in the bill.

“An automatic increase in California’s minimum wage does not take into consideration the state of the economy,” Gage said. “While on the service the increase seems fair, it may have negative impacts during difficult economic times.”

County supervisors voted 4-1 to support the bill. The state’s lowest wage was raised in 2002 from $6.25. California has the sixth highest minimum wage in the country.
