Police in Gilbert, Ariz., are investigating the death of former Live Oak High athlete Randy Lavrar, who died unexpectedly at his home in the Phoenix suburb on Tuesday, April 12.

According to Cmdr. Tim Dorn, Lavrar’s death has been ruled unintentional and a cause of death is pending. Dorn said there is an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lavrar’s death.

The medical examiner’s report is pending.

Lavrar, 27, graduated from Live Oak High in 1996. He was a standout athlete who starred at running back on the Acorn football team. He also played baseball at Live Oak and was a popular student.

“He was a great player, one of our best,” former Live Oak football coach Norm Dow said. “He was a very good athlete and very popular, a very happy-go-lucky kind of guy.”

“He was one of those charismatic young men who drew people to him,” his stepmother Billy Ann Lavrar said.

After graduation, Lavrar moved to the Phoenix area, where he lived until his death. Lavrar worked as a personal trainer for Gold’s Gym in Gilbert. He was also a competitive bodybuilder and a successful Xtreme cage fighter.

Lavrar was born Nov. 10, 1977, in Mountain View. He moved with his family to Morgan Hill in the mid-1980s, where he played youth sports.

A memorial service was held Saturday, April 16, at the Lakeshore Mortuary Chapel in Mesa, Ariz.

Lavrar is survived by his father Tom and stepmother Billy Ann, both of Morgan Hill; mother Nancy Wheeler of Fremont; and siblings Tommy, Denise, Katie and Shelly.
