Two-way linemen, Robles, Poulsen, among selections
MORGAN HILL — The Blossom Valley Athletic League released its Mount Hamilton Division football accolades this past week, and though Live Oak did not receive any special-recognition awards, four Acorns named to the first- and second-team all-league lists.
Among the seniors, Dylan Frechette, Michael Singleton, Dominic Leach and offensive lineman Nick Robles made the first team, and Erik Poulsen and Mark Weber the second. Juniors Cody Van Aken and Blair Zerr are second-team selections.
Those eight players helped the Acorns return to the Central Coast Section playoffs this fall after they missed out for the first time in three years last season. Live Oak (4-7 overall, 4-3 league) lost 28-24 to eventual finalist Terra Nova in the opening round of the Division III tournament.
Frechette, who was a key contributor on both sides of the ball, was honored as a defensive back after recording 23 tackles and an interception. He also totaled three touchdown passes and three rushing scores.
One of Frechette’s favorite targets was Leach, a 6-foot-3 wideout who led the Acorns in receiving yards (483) and touchdown catches (6) for the second straight season.
In his first year at Live Oak, Van Aken became the Mount Hamilton’s fourth-leading receiver among tight ends with 251 yards. He also made 40 tackles at strong safety.
The Acorns’ steady ground attack produced a breakthrough season for Zerr. The 165-pound running back totaled a team-high 681 rushing yards — eighth most in the division — and three touchdowns.
Linebackers Singleton and Weber anchored a defense that became the team’s biggest story. Singleton’s 135 tackles ranked third in the Mount Hamilton, and Weber’s 112 were sixth. Both recovered three fumbles.
Poulsen, a 6-foot-3 260-pound defensive tackle, recorded 26 tackles to go with 7.5 sacks, the fourth-most in league. Poulsen started both ways next to Robles, who had nine tackles.
