Sanford rushes for 151 yards, two touchdowns in 27-0 victory
over Bay Cities
SAN MATEO — The Morgan Hill Junior Midget Raiders started the Pop Warner season strong with a 27-0 victory over the Bay Cities Bulldogs on Aug. 29 at San Mateo High School.
The Raiders relied on a balanced attack and swarming defense. They dominated time of possession, holding the ball for 70 percent of the game.
The offense was led by Max Sanford, who carried 10 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Morgan Hill totaled 331 yards on the ground and four rushing scores. Marcus Valcarcel and Grant Gluhaich accounted for the other two touchdowns.
Clay Miller scored a PAT on an end-around play, and Josh Alaniz kicked a 2-point conversion to cap the scoring for Morgan Hill.
Maximo Zhang recorded five tackles and one assist to lead the Raiders defense. Morgan Hill swarmed the ball the entire game, playing with intensity until the final whistle.
Roaming in the secondary, Miller tipped away several long passes to help preserve the shutout. Teammate Jacob Saldivar applied constant pressure to the quarterback with Zhang and Brandon Purcell tallying sacks.
