Morgan Hill Unified School District staff will be laying out the framework and timeline for two new focus academy curriculums at two district elementary schools planned for the start of the 2014-15 school year at the upcoming Dec. 10 Board of Education meeting.
At San Martin/Gwinn Elementary, the district is planning to implement an science framework, while, at P.A. Walsh Elementary, a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, known as STEAM, has been devised.
Cecilio Dimas, STEAM Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the Santa Clara County Office of Education, will present a progress report of the planning to date for P.A. Walsh. Board approval is needed to allow staff to continue to work with parents and the community to finalize plans for a fall 2014 opening.
Manny Barbara, Vice President of Advocacy and Thought Leadership for the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, will give a progress report of the planning to date for San Martin Gwinn, which is also home to the Dual Immersion Multicultural Education program, known as DIME. Again, Board approval will be needed to finalize plans for a fall 2014 opening.
Other agendized items include MHUSD’s Common Core Implementation Fund Plan for $1.6 million in funds received from the state; a pair of construction contracts for an emergency roof repair at Britton Middle School and structured cabling installation at Martin Murphy Middle School; and a Memorandum of Understanding between MHUSD and the South County California Student Opportubnity and Access Program, called CalSOAP, to provide services for Central High School students.
Additionally, the district is seeking Board approval for 80 Live Oak High School and Ann Sobrato High School students to attend the Cal-SOAP Southern California College Tour from Feb. 18-21. School Board Trustee Bob Benevento is hoping to gain nomination to California School Boards Association Delegate Assembly 2014-18.
The Board will also discuss a new bylaw, forbidding its trustees from using electronic devices for communications during Board meetings.
