A one-acre grass fire early Monday afternoon was doused before
it could damage two nearby buildings but it was a close call since
humidity was low and the winds brisk.
A one-acre grass fire early Monday afternoon was doused before it could damage two nearby buildings but it was a close call since humidity was low and the winds brisk.
Both the Inn at Morgan Hill and the Harley-Davidson motorcycle dealership building, now under construction, were quite near the fire on the northbound onramp from Tennant Avenue to U.S. 101.
“It burned pretty quickly,” said Santa Clara County Battalion Chief Brad Darbro. He said they were able to stop the fire before it reached the buildings or burned further east.
“We have extra staffing just for these conditions,” Darbro said about the humidity and winds that are not unusual for October.
Firefighters from engines from the Santa Clara County Fire Department’s El Toro and Dunne/Hill stations plus two from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention in south Morgan Hill helped put out the fire.
Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.
“The wind was blowing in the right direction,” Darbro said, “so we held it at Tennant.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
