San Jose – In a real nail-biter, the Live Oak field hockey team battled Presentation to a 1-1 tie Tuesday in Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division action.
In the opening minutes, Presentation scored the first goal off a short corner.
Live Oak picked up the pace, dominating the end of the first half and answered back with a goal by Kami Tersini.
The Acorns battled through the adjustment of playing on turf and entered the game short-handed because of injuries and sickness.
That gave some other players, such as defender Kourtney Kientzy, a chance to step up their game. She played an offensive defense and had smooth hits down line.
Carrying the momentum, midfielders Robin Nelson and Sarah and Amanda Whitling fed the balls up to Rebecca Webb and the rest of the forwards.
Smooth passes switching up the field allowed the Acorns to control the ball and the game went into overtime.
In the intense extra period, sweeper Holly Turray shut down a breakaway in the fifth minute that was cleared out by left defense Kelly McDonald. The defensive line kept out the aggressive Panthers through several short corners.
Sarah Locarnini, despite fighting the flu, had several opportunities up top with Tersini, but none turned the tie into a win. The game ended with Robin Nelson stopping a short corner attempt as the clock ticked down to zero, leaving the game tied 1-1.
