A Morgan Hill man who pleaded guilty to stabbing his roommate below the eye will appear in court next week after Monday’s sentencing hearing was postponed.
Julio Hernandez, 27, faces a maximum prison sentence of two years for his conviction in November on an assault with a deadly weapon charge, according to Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office spokeswoman Amy Cornell. Hernandez stabbed his roommate, Carlos Medina, 24, at their apartment on West Fourth Street Sept. 25.
Police said the stabbing occurred while the two were fighting over a mutual female acquaintance. Both Hernandez and Medina had been drinking prior to the late-night incident, but were not intoxicated.
The stabbing happened about 1 a.m., and Hernandez had fled the scene on foot before police arrived. He was later found hiding behind trash cans and was arrested without incident, police said. Medina was transported to the hospital then released.
A sentencing hearing in the South County Courthouse was scheduled for Monday, but was postponed to Jan. 11.
