MH Student Wins at Poetry Santa Cruz Competition
MORGAN HILL RESIDENT JINA PARK, a senior at MONTE VISTA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL, in Watsonville, will have her poem included in the anthology published annually by the SANTA CRUZ COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL POETRY COMPETITION sponsored by Poetry Santa Cruz.
Park’s poem, “Snow Corns,” is one of the 53 selected for publication from among 356 poems submitted.

MH Resident Earns, Receives Ph.D.
MORGAN HILL RESIDENT MELISSA SORCI has graduated from Fielding Graduate University’s school of psychology. Sorci received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Fielding Graduate University, headquartered in Santa Barbara, is a world leader in master’s and doctoral education. Fielding created one of the first and most successful graduate-level distributed learning models, enabling students to participate effectively from anywhere in the world.
Seeking Families for Foreign Exchange Students
NW Services, a non-profit and CSIET-approved program, is seeking caring families in the area to host high school students from Mongolia, Japan, Colombia, Belgium, France, and other countries for the 2007 academic and fall semester. The students are 15-18 years of age and will arriving in August to spend the next five-ten months in the country while attending a local high school.
Students are pre-screened, speak English and look forward to learning about American culture while teaching about their culture and country. They have medical insurance and their own spending money. Host families are not paid but may be able to claim a $50 per month charitable contribution on their income tax.

Free, Reduced-price Meals Offered at Gav Child Development Center
The Gavilan College Child Development Center has announced renewed sponsorship of the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) for the academic year 2007-08. Through CACFP, children from households that receive food stamps, Kin-GAP, or FDPIR benefits or CalWORKS are automatically eligible for free meal benefits. In addition, children from households with qualifying incomes are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
The Gavilan College Child Development Center offers three subsidized child-care programs that are designed for families with financial challenges. The General Campus and General Child Care Preschool are provided for children who have at least one parent enrolled at Gavilan College. Students enrolled in six or more units with the highest financial need have priority. The Half-Day State Preschool has income criteria, but parental enrollment at Gavilan College is not mandatory.
In addition to the subsidized programs, the center has family-paid programs which are open to the community.Â
The Gavilan College Child Development Center is NAEYC accredited and highly trained staff are all CPR/First Aid certified. The center is located in a state-of-the-art facility on the Gavilan College Gilroy campus.
