Hannah Meade

Mount Madonna Senior Honored for Leadership

Mount Madonna School senior Hannah Meade, of Watsonville, was recently honored by Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area with the Devcon Community Service Award. This merit-based recognition is given to athletes who excel in their chosen sport, maintain a high GPA and give back to their local community.

Cal-Hi cited Meade’s commitment to academic excellence in earning a 3.97 grade point average, athletic prowess as a powerful and skilled outside hitter on the MMS Hawks girls varsity volleyball team and outstanding volunteerism in her community.

Over the summer Meade helped organized a huge blanket drive for the local Salvation Army that collected enough bedding to outfit its new facility, and she continues to help with feeding Watsonville’s homeless.

Cal-Hi Sports covers more than 170 high schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond with score and highlights reporting. Cal-Hi Sports Bay Area can be viewed on TV20 at 7pm and 11pm on Sundays.

On May 30, 2008, some 80 of the Bay Area’s best student athletes, including Meade, will be honored at an awards ceremony hosted by Cal-Hi Sports at the EA Sports Facility in Redwood City.

Gavilan Offers Legal Resources Class for Seniors

Adults 55 and over are invited to take a free non-credit class Wednesdays, Oct. 3 through Nov. 14 in legal resources. The class will provide information on planning for the future, elder law, wills and estate planning, power of attorney and health care directives. The class is in open-entry format, meaning participants can begin attending at any time.

Session one is from 2:30-5:30pm and session two is from 6-9pm. The class is offered at the Morgan Hill campus, 17060 Monterey Road, room 12.

Although some of these issues may be difficult for seniors to think about, the best time for them to educate themselves about the resources is before they’re needed, according to class organizers.

Non-credit instruction is offered through the Gavilan College department of Community Development and Grants Management.

October is Disabilities Awareness Month

The Gavilan College Disability Resource Center is inviting Gavilan College students, staff and community of all ability levels to learn more about people with disabilities and the resources available to them.

October has been designated as “Disability Awareness Month” and the staff of the center has planned a number of activities, including a meeting of service providers, a display of “Did You Know” facts, Movie Days highlighting characters with a variety of disabilities followed by discussion and an interactive experience. Prior years included opportunities to navigate the admissions area in a wheelchair, read and write backwards using mirrors and other activities designed to help people understand the experience of those with disabilities.

Almost everyone will develop physical or other disabilities at some point in their lives. We are all “temporarily abled.” Many disabilities, including learning disabilities, diabetes and psychological disabilities, are invisible, experts say.

Depending on how disability is defined, between 15 and 20 percent of U.S. citizens have some limitation due to a disability – from 38 to 52 million people. More than 7 million use devices to compensate for mobility impairments: 4.8 million use canes, 1.8 million use walkers, 1.6 million use wheelchairs, 1.7 million use back braces. Among working people, in 1995, people with disabilities earned on average only 72 cents for every dollar earned by non-disabled people.

People with disabilities are four to ten times more likely to be assaulted, robbed, or sexually attacked than people who are not disabled. One recent study found that more than 70 percent of women with developmental disabilities are sexually assaulted in their lifetimes, which represents a 50 percent higher rate than the rest of the population.

Activities include:

  • Oct. 12 – A network of community agencies serving people with disabilities will meet at Gavilan College and tour the Disability Resource Center 10am – noon in the Disability Resource Center.

  • Oct. 16-18 – Display of “Did You Know” facts in the Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy

  • Oct. 23 -24 – Movie Days, 9:30-11:30am and noon – 2pm in the Student Center (free and open to the public)

  • Oct. 30 – Interactive activity, 11am–1pm in the Student Center.
