Why do people exercise? To lose weight or to “get fit?” To impress a member of the opposite sex?
Because a doctor advises it to help lower blood pressure or cholesterol? Or perhaps another medical condition such as diabetes, which may require exercise to regulate insulin levels, is present.
Indisputably, overall health is the most important reason to exercise, especially when an individual’s health is compromised, as when diabetes, cancer, leukemia, or some other catastrophic disease is present.
Children are at risk as much as adults are, when it comes to life threatening diseases. Ailments such as diabetes and cancer do not restrict themselves to the over 18 crowd. They do not discriminate by age. Organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital recognize this fact.
As a part of local community support to St. Judes, Gold’s Gym in Morgan Hill is hosting a “Workout Against Cancer” on Monday, April 21. The public is invited to come to the gym and participate in this worthwhile cause. Guest fees will be waived with a contribution to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
The late entertainer, Danny Thomas (actress Marlo Thomas’ father), founded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee in 1962. He believed that “no child should die before he has a chance to live.”
The hospital is dedicated to finding cures for such childhood diseases. Since opening, the Hospital has developed protocols that have brought survival rates for childhood cancers from less then 20 percent to better than 70 percent overall.
They are supported through charities, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. The hospital treats children from all 50 states and from 60 foreign countries.
