The hills south of San Jose thundered with the sounds of shotgun fire on Friday. And, it was all for a good cause.

The Seventh Annual Kirk’s Celebrity Invitational brought current and former 49er players and coaches to shoot clay pigeons, do some archery and gamble – all to raise money for Morgan Hill’s Community Solutions and St. Catherine’s School.

Former 49er Randy Kirk, a Morgan Hill resident who graduated from Bellarmine in 1983, brought together people from around the Bay Area as well as former 49ers to raise money.

“Randy is really committed to helping the community,” said Lisa DeSilva from Community Solutions.

In the past six years, the event has raised more than $210,000 and Kirk said he expected to raise between $40,000 and $50,000 this year.

“Normally, we have 21 groups of four, (and this year) we have 27,” Kirk said. “It’s a sell-out every year.”

Kirk started the event after he went on a ride-along with a friend of his who is a police officer in San Diego.

During the trip, they busted a woman with three children for drugs.

Kirk said the children, all of whom were younger than 16, went into foster care and most likely ended up getting split up.

As a result, Kirk decided to initiate a charity event to raise money for organizations that help children in those kinds of situations.

In 2001, he added the St. Catherine’s School, following the death of his brother, Chuck, who attended the school.

Being an outdoorsman and an advocate for the proper use of guns, he decided to hold a clay shoot.

“It is great what Randy is doing here,” said former 49er defensive lineman Dana Stubblefield. “It’s great that he is giving back and doing a lot for the community.”

In addition to Stubblefield, former 49er and Carolina Panther coach George Seifert, and ex-players Tim Provost, Max Yates, Patrick Estes and Cole Farden all attended the fundraising event.
