As the end of the year approaches, students at Sobrato High are busy more than ever. More buildings became available after the winter break. The opening of the Shintani Library and the gymnasium, in particular, gave us all a fresh boost to plunge into many new activities. Sobrato High School and the Bulldogs feel that they have achieved a new level of accomplishment.
In our new gym, we had our first assembly on April 13. The assembly was for the student government body elections for next year with a half-time performance from our concert band. On April 15, more than 300 people, including our friends from Live Oak, attended a Mardi Gras dance.
The first official rally was organized on April 21, to announce next year’s student government officers and to introduce the spring sport teams for swimming, track and field, baseball, and softball. Considering that we only have freshman-sophomore teams, most of our athletes are doing well.
ASB officers visited Britton and Martin Murphy middle schools to welcome the incoming freshmen and to answer their questions. On April 19 officials from the WASC visited Sobrato and met with teachers, parents and ASB students.
Our science department had undertaken great activities. On the weekend of April 15-17, around 30 students went on a trip to Catalina Island in Southern California. While learning about marine biology, they also enjoyed a day and night snorkeling, hiking and other activities. In the biology pGLO lab, students had the opportunity to experiment on genetic recombination of bacterial plasmid and jellyfish’s fluorescent gene. Most of the results were successful, with the bacteria glowing green under the UV light.
Sobrato’s band director, Erik Kalish and his concert band did an excellent job this year, in spite of the fact that the band room is still not ready and daily practices are held elsewhere.
The band went to Southern California for a Form Festival during the weekend of April 15-17. Our concert band won the highest (gold) rating, for its performance at the festival. The band received recognition for its dedication at the Music Workshop at Disneyland. Two of our students, Stephanie Torres and Josh Galindo, also received Musicianship Awards. Sobrato hopes to field a marching band next year.
Two hundred honor roll Sobrato students attended an annual college fair at Santa Clara on April 28 to get information and the available opportunities at many colleges and universities.
In the coming weeks, we still have many more activities lined up: Battle of the Bands on May 13, Bay Cruise in June, the sports final and semester finals. On the last day of the school, we are organizing the year-end celebrations with free food, trivia questions, slide shows, rallies and more.
Sobrato ASB wants to thank all those individuals, families, business and other local organizations for purchasing the bricks.
