this weekend in Fresno at the Clovis Masters Water Polo Club10th
Annual Spring Invitational Tournament. This was El Toro Brew
Master’s first tournament of 2003 and the season.
FRESNO – The El Toro Brew Masters Water Polo Club won all four games this weekend in Fresno at the Clovis Masters Water Polo Club10th Annual Spring Invitational Tournament. This was El Toro Brew Master’s first tournament of 2003 and the season.
El Toro won the first game against the host Clovis 10–4. In the next game, El Toro beat the Blue Devils from Merced 6-5. The Sunday semifinals was against Gold Country Masters (formally the Sierra Masters). El Toro won 10–7. The championship game against the Santa Monica Water Polo Club proved to be the toughest and closest game. El Toro came away with a hard-fought 6-5 win.
Outstanding performances were turned in by goalies “Big Red” Ben Tait and Karl Hoffower as well as the Traverso brothers Steven and Bryan. Justin Brink, David Letts, Mike Yoshida and Brian Lerable’s efforts were superior as well. Isaac, Dee Wilson, Alan Podawiltz, Chris “Crazy Eyes” Filice and brothers Geno and Meno Acevedo provided the balance of strong play.
Immediately following the championship game one of the referees approached El Toro’s goalie “Big Red” and said, “I just have to shake your hand. Great Job in the cage.” If the tournament had an MVP it would have probably have been Tait. Steven Traverso would have been in the running for tournament MVP too as he provided the majority of points for the team throughout the event.
El Toro Brew Masters is open to any interested men or women from the ages of about 19 years and older. For insurance purposes registration with USA Water Polo is required. If interested you should have some aquatic sports background and be (or want to become) a moderately strong swimmer. Practice is held on Saturdays from 9:30 -11 a.m. at the Live Oak High School pool. Cost is $5 per session.
