El Toro Youth Center held a computer fix it fair on Saturday that turned out even better than expected, according to Director Lori Escobar.
The new techies were parents and teenagers who began a class in September to learn how to navigate through the world of technology and, possibly, end up with a job.
“I knew they could do it,” Escobar said, “but seeing it actually come alive was miraculous.”
She said they hesitated to publicize the event too widely in fear of being overwhelmed but, when 15 or so people showed up at a time, the “staff” had no problem.
“We fixed all but two,” she said.
One they did manage to fix was infested with 400 viruses, a not uncommon affliction among computers that showed up Saturday. Several “bugged” computers were cleaned out and sent home with a new, licensed security system.
She said El Toro Youth Center looks forward to having another computer fair if they can get the funding, from Microsoft, or other computer-related business.
Escobar said the center, supported by Community Solutions, is about to take the students and their parents into the final phase of the job program by importing human resources professionals to teach about resumes, interviewing and how to look for the right job.
