Geno Acevedo, owner and brewmaster of El Toro Brewing Company was crowned the Hop Union Alpha King at the Falling Rock Pub in Denver on Sept. 26.

This award is a very coveted award by brewmasters all over the country. It is judged by a prestigious panel of peer brewmasters, brewery press and hop producers.

El Toro’s Deuce Imperial India Pale Ale was judged to be the best of the hoppiest beers in the country by the judging panel thus bestowing Geno with the honor of “Hop King.”

“I am extremely honored to receive this recognition from my peers,” said Acevedo in his acceptance speech. “To have my beer to be judged the best of the hoppiest best in the country is very humbling when you look out at all of the best and finest brewers and your beers here.”

Hops are one of the four ingredients in beer. The others are cereal grain (primarily malted barley), water and yeast.

Hops is the component gives beer its distinctive flavor and aroma. Herb, spice and citrus are the ones Acevedo values most in his very “hoppy” version of India Pale Ale.

El Toro also claimed a Bronze Medal at the 2003 Great American Beer Festival Competition (GABF) awards ceremony for its flagship El Toro Oro Golden Ale in the English-Style Summer Ale category. El Toro Oro Golden Ale received a gold medal at the GABF back in 1994.

The 2003 GABF competition winners were selected by an international panel of brewing experts from a field of 2,000 entries received from 400 breweries. More than 1,400 breweries were invited to compete.

“The Great American Beer Festival is the premier judging event for the American craft brewing industry,” said Nancy Johnson, Festival Director. “Being chosen a winner, no matter if gold, silver or bronze is truly an accomplishment.”

On Sept. 20, El Toro won “Best of Show” for the Deuce Imperial India Pale Ale. El Toro also won two gold medals for its Deuce Imperial India Pale Ale and El Toro India Pale Ale and a bronze for the Poppy Jasper Amber .

The El Toro Brewing Company received awards at the 2003 California State Fair’s Commercial Craft Brewers Competition last August. They brought home two third place ribbons for the India Pale Ale, El Toro Oro Golden Ale and El Toro Negro Oatmeal Stout.
