Dear Editor,

The proposed DMV driving test revision demonstrates another way government gets it wrong. The ‘plan’ is to make touch screens available, which will immediately give the corrected answer on a test and allow an immediate ‘do-over’.

This is a symptom of a bigger problem. We have dummied-down too many areas of our life. In California, the heart of Silicon Valley technological advances, one would think we’d house the prime of intellects.

Think again. Our state is low on the totem pole of academic achievement (bottom third of all states). We cater to the lowest common denominator, and we’ve reaped the rotten harvest of what we’ve sewn.

A state has a responsibility to use taxpayers’ monies wisely. In the words of a bygone era, the proof is in the pudding. Unfortunately, the only proof we have shows we’ve failed.

Since we can’t educate people well enough to take a drivers’ test, let’s dummy that down too! Great idea. Now we can have uneducated, unqualified drivers turned loose on the roads.

Ah, the governmental mind set. How about giving people the correct answers up front, and see if they can push the right buttons?

Hey … let’s copy this idea for university exams!
