I attended my first City Council meeting Wednesday. I spoke against the downtown library relocation site. There was a big hype about boosting the economy of downtown. There was a builder with his architects and planners, business owners, members of the downtown association, a sculptor, and someone speaking on behalf of the economic development of Morgan Hill. All these speakers had some monetary gain to make from a downtown library location.

The general public and Library Commission was poorly represented with speakers. Why? It is because the City Council members don’t listen? The concerns of the citizens that did speak were not taken seriously, in my opinion. The council members Larry Carr and Steve Tate were ready to vote for the downtown . Hedy Chang and Dennis Kennedy were also in favor of it but postponed the decision until Greg Sellers could be present to vote on July 21.

I have learned that there are five people making very important decisions about our community, who have no idea what the real citizens want. It seems to me that they are so bombarded by the opinions of people that want to make a buck, that they are not really doing what we elected them to do – represent us. Either we have elected the wrong people or we are not doing enough to represent ourselves. So don’t be surprised when the city council votes for a downtown library on July 21, unless you’re there to tell them what you really want.
