Moving the library to Third and Depot streets in Downtown is an excellent idea for many reasons. First of all, the old location may have been perfect for Morgan Hill residents at one time. But the town has flourished, spread out, and it’s residents are now living South, North, and many on the East side of town. The current location only serves a small portion of the residential Community.

I understand that this small group of residents are upset because of if the library moves they will no longer be able to walk out the front door and across the street to their own residential library. It is understandable why they would be upset. Having your own private library in your neighborhood is nice, but the reality is that the library is a public library and serves the entire community.

Another benefit is that a lot of our main roads will lead to the library. The new Sobrato High School students will be able to come south on Monterey or Butterfield. The location just simply serves all the schools better.

If you look at the long-term effects, I think you would find that as population grows, the small residential area that the library is in will become highly congested and noisy. With all of that traffic I don’t believe the residents of this neighborhood would be very happy.

Lastly, I would like to commend the people for looking into the future and wanting a library downtown, and for keeping the focus on the heart of the community. Just south of us Gilroy is having a hard time keeping the downtown alive. A library downtown for residents and merchants is an excellent idea – a public library for the entire public.
