Dear Editor,

Regarding Lee Schmidt’s well written letter in [Tuesday] Times , I find myself in general agreement with all of the points presented, with the exception of No. 2, which just needs some slight correction.

The money spent (which I think was actually more than the $80K that Lee cited), was not spent on an investigation of the City Manager and City Attorney.

It was, in fact, spent on an investigation to find out who was following and possibly filming the City Manager; allegedly entering the Manager’s hotel room while he was on city business, and ordering room service hot chocolate for two for the alleged, and ham-handed, purpose of making it appear the Manager might be conducting an affair with someone.

Given the city’s responsibility to ensure a safe work environment for their employees, the council had no choice but to investigate. (Although I would think it could have been done for less money.)

Lee Schmidt’s justified outrage regarding this expenditure would be better directed to the local businessman who precipitated the whole thing just because a development deal wasn’t going his way, and who apparently hoped to get dirt on the City Manager and City Attorney in order to discredit them.

The same businessman, I might add, who is now suing the city for defamation because the results of the investigation showed him to be the responsible party, which he was, and I guess that makes him feel bad.

Boo-hoo, but this one’s gonna cost us taxpayers a bunch more before it gets laughed out of court, and it’s not the city’s fault

And for the record, my opinions of everyone and everything involved in this sorry tale are just that: opinions. They are entirely my own, based on my own observations and are in no way to be construed as statements of fact. Do your own due diligence and make up your own mind.

I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings and get sued for defamation, after all.
