We work very hard to make sure that board member requests are honored in a timely manner. I was the one who received an e-mail request (attached) from Mrs. Thomas for a copy of the grant. I did not understand the urgency for her request. Had I known that she needed a copy in order to vote on Monday, I would have hand-delivered it to her home if necessary.
Mrs. (Valerie) Hickey called me by phone the same day and asked me for a copy of the grant as soon as possible. She asked if she could come by later that day and pick one up. I made a copy for her immediately and she had it by Thursday afternoon. If Shellé had asked me, I would have done the same for her.

Editor’s note: Julie Zintsmaster, executive secretary to Superintendent Carolyn McKennan and a former School Board trustee, is responding to a story in the Nov. 7 edition of The Times regarding a federal grant for small learning communities at Live Oak High. Trustee Shellé Thomas said she requested a copy of the 79-page grant application in order to read it prior to the Nov. 3 board meeting when trustees would vote to accept the grant.
