Applications for Garlic Queen

The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association is proud to announce contestant applications are now available for the 28th Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant. Packets are available at the Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey St., in Gilroy.

Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant is a scholarship pageant. Contestants are judged on personal interview, speech, talent and evening gown. In addition to the selection of Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen, scholarships will be awarded to many pageant contestants.

Applicants must be a resident of Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill, Hollister, San Juan Bautista or Aromas; a single female who has never been married and has no children; a high school graduate by June 2006; and between the ages of 18 to 24 by July 2006. Deadline to enter is March 17 at 4:30pm.

The Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Pageant is scheduled for April 29 at 7pm at the Gavilan College Theater.

Symphony Players Needed

The South Valley Symphony is in need of first and second violin players to participate in their upcoming concerts of April 2 and June 2 POPS concert which will be held at Bonfante Gardens. They are also in dire need of viola and cellists to perform with the community orchestra.

The symphony holds rehearsals on Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm in band room B-7 at the Solorsano Middle School in Gilroy. Those interested in sitting in, should contact board president Barbara Bottini at 846-9247 or John Graham at (831) -623-4062.

Visit the Coe Park Backcountry

For one weekend this spring, Henry W. Coe State Park will open the gate at Bells Station on Highway 152 east of Gilroy. The Coe Backcountry Weekend, held in the little-traveled east side of the 87,000 acre park is scheduled for April 29-30.

The day-use fee for the event is $20 per vehicle, for either Saturday or Sunday. The fee for camping or backpacking Saturday night is $40 per vehicle. The fee for backpacking Friday and Saturday nights is $50 per vehicle. There is no limitation on the number of people in a vehicle.

Entrance is by application only. Only one application is accepted per address. Applications are available now on the park’s Web site. Written requests for applications (include a self-addressed stamped business envelope) should be addressed to Application Forms, Coe Backcountry Weekend, 1410 Terri Lynn Court, Gilroy, CA 95020.

To be eligible for the drawing, applications must be postmarked by Feb. 28. For those applications drawn, a package containing the following will be sent: backcountry entrance ticket and more information about the event. Applicants will hear from park staff, one way or the other, by mid-March.
