The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed it will hire longtime San Jose Mercury News crime reporter Sean Webby as its new media coordinator.

District Attorney Jeff Rosen broke the news Tuesday morning. Webby, a three-time Pulitzer nominee, is expected to start his new post within the next several weeks following a background check, said Lisa McCrary, the District Attorney’s ombudsman who has handled press requests since former media coordinator Amy Cornell left for the Santa Clara County Public Health Department in July.

McCrary says she’ll likely return focus to her regular duties, while Webby will take a “lead role” in responding to needs and questions from local media. Actual job duties, however, won’t be delegated until Webby officially joins the office, she said.

“And then we’ll get down to distributing the work load,” McCrary said.

Webby has covered crime and law enforcement activities at the Mercury News since 2000, according to the District Attorney’s office.
