Gilroy – Looking to hone and tone racing skills and muscles, the cycling and triathlon club Wolf Pak had a “Skills, Drills, and Hills” training session on Oct. 7 at Christmas Hill Park in Glroy.
The Wolf Pak is a team of almost 50 adult and youth riders based out of Morgan HIll, but it also includes riders from Gilroy and other South County areas. Everyone trains together as a team and often participate in road races and triathlons.
The accompanying photos are from a recent training session put on by Judd Kincaid, a part time racer and life-long cyclist.
Judd now caters to the Wolf pak as a mobile, certified team mechanic.
The class starts out on a big grassy field and lasts about two hours. It consists of half a dozen handling drills which riders work on together.
The class also covers things like “track stands”, bike handling, tight group riding and situation reflexes and reactions.
The first half of the session finishes with a fun game called “Thunder Dome” that incorporates all the balancing exercises from the class. The last man, woman or child standing wins.
After that, the second half is a short group road ride that involves some tight switch-back descending drills.
Kincaid offer this class and others to cycling groups of any level.
“I’ve been racing road bikes for a while too, and it’s something you never do,” Kincaid said. “”It’s something you never work on but it makes a big difference to your improvement.”
