“Dear Red Phone, on Saturday, July 4 about 11 a.m., we experienced a power outage on Watsonville Road. My question to you is why is it that when anything happens on Watsonville Road past Santa Teresa Boulevard and Sunnyside Avenue intersection that no one seems to care what happens to us just because we are not consider ‘part of Morgan Hill?’ The Morgan Hill Police Department does not even have jurisdiction up here and it seems that we are always forgotten about. The Hummingbird Fire was not even really covered in the papers because we are out of city limits. I guess we are good enough to pay city taxes but not good enough to ever find out what has happened in our neck of the woods. Why do city officials continue to ignore us?”
Dear Forgotten, Red Phone is perplexed. Those who live outside the city limits, and that includes Red Phone, are not ignored by the paper. We extensively covered last June’s Hummingbird Fire. In fact, all reporters, photographers and editors worked both Saturday and Sunday that weekend, providing up to the hour coverage on the Morgan Hill Times Web site. Information regarding evacuations, road closures and shelter locations was invaluable to residents in the area. in addition, just this month we covered two fatal accidents out on Uvas Road west of Morgan Hill. And, although the Morgan Hill police do have jurisdiction out there, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department is always available. As to why the city ignores you, Red Phone isn’t sure officials intentionally disregard county residents. Perhaps you just need to be a bit more aggressive in getting your wishes and desires across to the political leaders who represent you. Don Gage represents you on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. He can be reached at 681-4609.
Thanks for the skate park
“I just wanted to thank all those responsible for the new skate park. It has been several years in the works and it has finally been completed. I saw it for the first time on the 4th of July and it looks very nice. I know that a lot of time and money was put into planing and building it and I just wanted to acknowledge and thank all of those involved in providing a place for skaters and bikers to practice their skills.”
Dear Approves, Red Phone checked out the new skate park this week, and was impressed with the design and the number of people taking advantage of the park. And just a warning to all those who enjoy park: Wear safety equipment.
