Dear Editor,
The May 2-5 story on my candidacy for the Santa Clara Valley Water District stated I didn’t believe we needed imported water through the San Felipe pipeline. This isn’t my position. Santa Clara County needs water from the San Luis reservoir. We wouldn’t survive without it. This year, about one third of all the water used in the county will be supplied from this source.
The article suggests I believe Anderson Reservoir water should be reserved for all South County needs. This isn’t my view. It’s true the water district stopped supplying Anderson water to the percolation ponds in Morgan Hill and replaced that source with the more expensive San Luis reservoir water. My position is these ponds are owed the proportionate share of Anderson water which was bound by a district contract and approved by voters in Morgan Hill. Even if Morgan Hill were to again receive its proportionate share, we would still require San Luis water. The benefit would be to lower South County’s imported water cost.
Last, the district budgeted for 903 staff positions before the state “stole” $51 million in property tax; this year’s adopted budget was for 813 employees.
